The True Mirror Company
43 E 1st St between First and Second Aves (614-6636). Subway: F to Second Ave. Wed-Sun 2-8pm
Forget Nico, mirrors from the True Mirror Company will be your mirror from now on. Five years ago, brother-and-sister team John and Catherine Walter began creating the True Mirror. Unlike regular mirrors, which reverse an image, the True Mirror presents a non-reversed, 3-D view. Consisting of a complex arrangement of mirrored surfaces inside a box, the device allows users to see themselves as they appear in the eyes of others. Not just another circus sideshow attraction, the True Mirror is described by its creators as "a powerful, practical and psychological tool used for developing self-awareness, self-knowledge, self-acceptance and self-confidence." On display in the Walters' East Village showroom, the True Mirror comes in 12-by-12-inch ($195) and 18-by-18-inch ($295) dimensions.
